Chris Delarna Mensalvas (1909-1978) immigrated to the United States from the Philippines in 1927. He became an important figure in the Filipino labor movements of the 1940s and '50s, organizing unions and initiating strikes for reasonable working conditions and fair wages for farm and cannery workers. Mensalvas was president of the International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union (ILWU) Local 37 in Seattle -- the Filipino Alaska cannery workers union. He died in 1978. From the d...

Carlos Bulosan was a Filipino-American author, poet, and migrant laborer. Carlos Bulosan was born in the Philippines in 1911. He began working as a day laborer at age 11 after only 3 years of formal schooling. He left home to provide for his own support at age 13. In 1931, at age 17, he came to Seattle, Washington but within 2 days was shanghaied by a local hotel proprietor and sold to an Alaskan fish cannery.
